Abstract

Distribution and use of species of the genus Passiflora (Passifloraceae) in the highlands of Lara and Falcón States, Venezuela.

Abstract

In order to quantify species of the genus Passiflora in Venezuela, 3 collecting missions were undertaken during 1996, in Andean lands of Lara State and in the Sierra de San Luis in Falcón State. A total of 126 samples belonging to 16 species were identified, 4 species were not identified but had similar characteristics to known species and 2 species were unidentified. The species found with a high frequency were: P. cuneata (19 samples), P. cincinnata (18), P. rubra (11), P. suberosa (10), P. subpeltata (9), P. biflora (7), P. cyanea (7), P. edulis var. flavicarpa (6), P. ligularis (6) and P. holosericea (6). The material collected was distributed in environments including dry premontane forest through to low humid mountain. This paper also includes uses and common names given to these species in the collecting areas.
