Abstract

Oreochromis niloticus (Teleostei: Cichlidae) now in the Limpopo River system.

Abstract

The first records of exotic Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, from the Limpopo River system, which forms the border between South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique are reported and differences between native Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus and O. niloticus are described. Conservation implications, such as the translocation of fish and possible hybridization with indigenous Oreochromis, are discussed.
