Abstract

Genetic control of red cell band 3 deficiency in Japanese black cattle.

Abstract

Hereditary deficiency of erythrocyte band 3 (EB) with spherocytosis was studied in Japanese Black cattle. Cows were mated with non-carrier bulls. The dam genotypes were determined by osmotic fragility of erythrocytes, while the sire genotypes were identified by previous production of affected offspring. Definitive genotypes were determined by causal DNA mutation. Of 12 calves produced by mating of heterozygous parents before introduction of control measures, 2 calves were affected. After introduction of control measures, no EB was diagnosed in 9 calves produced.
