Study on the structure and dynamics of populations of Cyclobalanopsis glauca in Jiande County, Zhejiang Province.
Cyclobalanopsis glauca [Quercus glauca] forest is one of the main types of evergreen broadleaved forest (EBLF) in the East China subtropical area. A study on its structure and dynamics was carried out in Jiande, Zhejiang, using the methods of contiguous grid quadrats and substitution of spatial for time seres. On the basis of a census of all individuals of the main populations in different communities, the size structure, the spatial pattern, and dynamics of the main populations are described. The size structure of Q. glauca and Lithocarpus glaber populations were irregular but stable and exhibited an inverted J-shape. The spatial distribution pattern of of Q. glauca populations was contagious for saplings, but random for small and middle sized tree classes. An analysis of the layer structure of the forest showed that the spatial distribution patterns of the dominant populations in the tree layer were random, but those of the shrub layer, and of seedlings or saplings of the dominant populations were contagious. The quantitative structure and dynamics of propagules of Q. glauca clone populations were also studied.
