Abstract

Hedychium coccineum, H. coronarium, H. flavescens and H. gardnerianum were identified in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Distribution maps, identification keys and botanical descriptions are provided. H. coronarium plants are a source of cellulose for paper manufacture, fibres for textiles and edible starch and can be used for animal feed. The aromatic flowers are used in the perfume industry and it has medicinal (diuretic, hypertensive, antidiabetic and antisyphilitic) and fungicidal properties. H. gardnerianum has ornamental value, is used in the perfume industry, is a source of primary material for the paper industry, has purgative properties. Both H. coronarium and H. gardnerianum can be weeds. H. coccineum has ornamental value. H. coronarium was collected from 22 municipalities, H. gardnerianum from Ouro Preto, H. coccineum from Belo Horizonte and H. flavescens from Itumirin.
