Inheritance of production and linear type traits in performance-tested Belgian Blue bulls.
Data were recorded on body weight, height, chest girth, feed conversion ratio and price per kg live weight in 2139 bulls. 1673 of the bulls were classified for 20 linear traits. Multiple-trait, derivative-free Restricted Maximum Likelihood estimates of variance and covariance components for the traits were obtained. The h2s of the traits ranged from 0.14 (feed conversion ratio) to 0.51 (height at 13 months of age). For the linear traits, the h2s ranged from 0.06 (forelegs) to 0.46 (height). Scores for vertical, longitudinal and lateral growth were mainly correlated (genetically and phenotypically) with body weight, while scores for muscular development and, to a lesser degree, scores expressing skeletal body conformation were correlated with price. Scores for muscling and skeletal body conformation had genetic correlations of 1 and 0.79 with price per kg live weight.
