Abstract

Genetic and environmental factors influencing the quality of pelt traits in Karakul sheep.

Abstract

This paper reviews aspects which are economically important in the breeding of Karakul sheep for pelt production. The review is divided into 2 sections, the first of which details the variation and inheritance of pelt colour and its associated fertility and mortality problems. The second part of the paper deals with the economic importance of, and genetic and non-genetic parameters affecting, pelt quality traits including curl type, pattern score, hair quality, hair length and pelt thickness.
