Abstract

Since its inception in 1998, 465 herds have joined the beef cattle performance recording scheme run by the Meat Technology Centre in Norway, and the first annual report has just been published. For an unspecified number of crossbred, Hereford, Aberdeen-Angus, Charolais, Simmental and Limousin bulls recorded in 1988, the average daily gain from birth to 365 days of age was 1131, 987, 989, 1233, 1344 and 1176 g respectively. The body weight at slaughter of young bulls of the 6 breed types averaged 310, 383, 255, 347, 337 and 350 kg respectively vs. 585, 450, 437, 552, 506 and 511 kg for adult bulls and 231, 239, 204, 284, 247 and 291 for young cows. Details are given of meat quality and prices.
