Abstract

First record of the mealybug Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) from Guadeloupe; present state of this pest of crops in the French Caribbean (Hem., Pseudococcidae).

Abstract

Maconellicoccus hirsutus is recorded from Guadeloupe for the first time, from specimens collected in April 1998 at Capesterre Belle-Eau on Allamanda cathartica, Alpinia purpurata, Artocarpus altilis, Citrus spp., Gliricidia sepium and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. The mealybug was accidentally introduced in the Caribbean recently (and has been recorded in Grenada, Trinidad, St-Kitts, Nevis, St Marteen and St-Barthelemy). Brief information on the biology, damage and control (particularly biological control) of the pest are given.
