Abstract

Relationships between the number of seeds in the cones of Abies alba Mill. and their infestation with Megastigmus suspectus Borr. (Hym., Torymidae).

Abstract

Studies were conducted on the inter-relationships between the total number of seeds in a cone of Abies alba and the numbers of seeds which were viable, infertile and infested with larvae of Megastigmus suspectus. Seed were obtained from cones collected in southern Poland in the Babia Góra National Park and its surroundings in 1991 and 1993, as well as in the Gorce National Park during 1994-95. A total of 376 cones with 112 136 seeds were used for the study. The data obtained were analysed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov's test and the Student's t-test. A coefficient of linear correlation was also calculated. No unequivocal correlation was found between the above relationships.
