A new genus and species of Nemonychidae (Coleoptera) associated with Araucaria angustifolia in Brazil.
A nemonychid without trace of a rostrum is described as Brarus mystes gen. et sp. nov. by the 1st author. It was found in cones of Araucaria angustifolia in Parana, Brazil, during October 1982-July 1983. Adults were abundant high up in the canopy in areas of natural occurrence when trees exhibited freshly open male strobili (cones). Larvae developed in these cones and, once mature, vacated them to spend the remainder of their development in the soil, emerging as adults 6-8 months later. Adults and larvae are described and key features illustrated.
