Studies on the optimum planting density of I-69 poplar plantation for plywood.

Abstract

Survey data from 290 areas in [Jiangsu Province] China were used to construct a stand density effect model for Populus 'I-69' (Populus deltoides 'Lux') in order to predict the maximum yield and optimum planting density for wood production for plywood. For this purpose a diameter of >26.8 cm and stand dominant height >28.9 m are suitable. An appropriate density was determined as not more than 285 trees/hm2, with a site index more or equal to 20 m. For site indices of 18, 20 and 22 m, the shortest rotations were 11, 10 and 9 yr, and the planting densities 257, 240 and 236 trees/hm2, respectively.
