Abstract
The status and advances of genetic improvement of Populus tomentosa Carr.
Abstract
Populus tomentosa is considered to be the best native poplar species in China. Therefore, a national programme for selection and breeding of the species was established in 1983. Since then, much work has been done, including research on (1) collection and conservation of genetic resources and the establishment of a clonal archive and arboretum, (2) provenance tests and clonal selection for plywood and construction timber, (3) back-cross breeding for pulpwood, (4) multiple crossing for resistance to cold and drought, (5) triploid breeding, and (6) development of a rapid system of vegetative propagation. Brief accounts are given of each of these programme parts.
