Abstract

Genetic and non-genetic analysis of neonatal mortality in Belgian Blue breed.

Abstract

An analysis was carried out using data recorded on 40 125 calvings of double-muscled Belgian Blue cows in 1985-94. Overall, neonatal calf mortality was 2.3%. The frequencies of unassisted calvings and calvings requiring slight assistance, traction and caesarean section were 1.2, 4.9, 2.4 and 91.5% respectively, and mortality for these classes of calving was 5.6, 3.6, 7.9 and 2.0%. Calf mortality at calving was lowest in April-August, and decreased with increasing parity. The stillbirth rate was higher for male than for female calves.
