Observations on the epidemiology of ruminant trypanosomosis in Kano State, Nigeria.

Abstract

The epidemiology of ruminant trypanosomiasis was investigated during 2 years [dates not given] in Kano State, Nigeria. Trypanosomes were detected by the haematocrit centrifugation technique and by buffy coat examination. Total prevalences of Trypanosoma infection were 59 of 1106 (5.3±1.3%, mean ± confidence interval), 1.2±1.6% of 166 and 0.7±1.3% of 152 cattle, sheep and goats, respectively. Prevalence of bovine trypanosomiasis was higher during the second year (6.1%) than in the first (4.8%). Infection rates doubled during the rainy season (7.6%) compared with an average of 3.8% during the dry season. There was a high infection rate in a northern guinea vegetational zone (Tudun-Wada local government area, LGA, 16.7%). This was the only area where there were tsetse flies (Glossina tachinoides). However, haematophagous flies were widespread in the sudan savanna and tabanids were particularly common. Trypanosoma vivax infected 3.0% of bovine herds and was accounted for 57.6% of all cases. It is suggested that vector control in Tudun-Wada LGA and chemoprophylaxis may prevent the transmission cycle of ruminant trypanosomiasis.
