Fruit flies attacking mangoes - their importance and post harvest control.
The importance of Ceratitis capitata, C. rosa and C. cosyra in the northern mango production area in South Africa was determined. C. cosyra was the dominant species. Hot water immersion as a quarantine treatment for fruit fly control was evaluated. Trials with the cultivars Kent, Heidi and Sensation indicated that a hot-water treatment of 47°C for 90 minutes gave control against C. capitata and C. cosyra. But since hot-water treatment will probably shorten the storage life, exporting the fruit by ship is not considered to be an option.
