Abstract

Prevention of mosaic virus diseases of squash with oil sprays alone or combined with insecticide or aluminum foil mulch.

Abstract

The effects of JMS stylet oil alone or combined with other treatments on mosaic virus diseases (watermelon mosaic 2 potyvirus, cucumber mosaic cucumovirus and zucchini yellow mosaic potyvirus) of squash were evaluated in field experiments in the Jordan Valley. The use of the insecticide Anthio 33 [formothion] alone or mixed with JMS stylet oil was ineffective. A weekly spray of JMS stylet oil alone in the spring growing season in the Jordan Valley to control mosaic virus diseases was unsatisfactory, where 30% of the total yield was unmarketable. When stylet oil was combined with aluminium foil mulch, the level of protection was acceptable, with only 16% of the total yield being unmarketable.
