Fireblight in Switzerland: retrospect and prospect.
Severe outbreaks of fireblight, caused by Erwinia amylovora, occurred on pome fruit trees and ornamental woody plants in Switzerland in 1995. Outbreaks occurred in previously unaffected areas, and apple trees became infected for the first time. An account of the damage caused in different cantons is given. The epidemiology of the disease is discussed, along with the forecasting system in operation in Switzerland. An outline is given of methods of controlling fireblight without the use of antibiotics which are forbidden to be used for this purpose in Switzerland. Finally, recommendations on monitoring the disease in 1996 are given.
