Abstract

An account of current taxonomy of pine (Pinus spp.) species of islands in the Caribbean region, including brief details of pine characteristics and natural distribution. At present, five species of the genus are recognized, one with two varieties. The species are Pinus caribaea var. caribaea (Cuba), Pinus caribaea var. bahamensis (Bahamas and Caicos Islands), Pinus tropicalis (Cuba), Pinus cubensis (Cuba), Pinus maestrensis (Cuba) and Pinus occidentalis (Hispaniola - Haiti and the Dominican Republic). A third variety of Pinus caribaea, Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis (found in Central America, in Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua) is also included in the report.
