Abstract

Studies on propagation and age of harvesting of poplar (Populus deltoides) cv 'G-3' for pulping.

Abstract

Nursery investigations with poplar (Populus deltoides) cv. 'G-3' [Populus 'G-3'] at Jorhat, Assam, in 1988-89 showed that it can be propagated by hardwood cuttings with higher success (sprouting 90% an survival >70%) during winter (December, January and February). A separate experiment in which saplings were planted at 1.5×1.5 m spacing in 1985 in 6×6 m plots and growth and yield measurements made after 1-7 yr showed that harvesting could be done at the minimum age of 4 yr. This age gave optimum yields of biomass and pulp, and was also the age of maximum current and mean annual increments for height, diameter at breast height and biomass.
