Natural distribution and current taxonomy of the genus Pinus in the Caribbean.

Abstract

The current status of the taxonomy of the pines in the Caribbean and is reported and their characteristics and natural distribution described. At present 4 species of the genus Pinus are distinguished, one of them in 2 varieties. These species are P. caribaea var. caribaea (from Cuba), P. caribaea var. bahamensis (from the Bahamas and Caicos), P. tropicalis (from Cuba), P. cubensis (from Cuba), P. maestrensis (from Cuba) and P. occidentalis (from Hispaniola). The third variety of P. caribaea (P. c. var. hondurensis) from Central America, is also included in the report.
