Pleiotropic influence of plumage genes on performance traits in guineafowl.
The body weight of keets from hatching to 12 weeks of age was recorded for White, Lavender and Pearl strains of Guncari guineafowls, with slow or fast plumage development genotypes. Egg production was also recorded. Rapid-feathering keets were heavier (P<0.05) than slow-feathering keets at 4 and 12 weeks of age. White and Lavender birds were heavier (P<0.05) than the Pearl strain at 8 and 12 weeks of age and started laying at a younger age (P<0.05). There were no differences in egg weight and shell thickness between any of the strains.
