Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

The scale insect and whitefly species of Switzerland (Homoptera: Coccoidea and Aleyrodoidea).

Abstract

A survey of Coccoidea and Aleyrodoidea was carried out in different parts of Switzerland. A total of 87 species of Coccoidea belonging to 9 families were found. Among them, 34 proved to be new for Switzerland and one is new for the European fauna. The total number of all species recorded from Switzerland from the field and greenhouses is now 115. Recently, some important pests of orchards (Quadraspidiotus marani, Q. ostreaeformis, Q. pyri) and of ornamental plants (Pseudaulacaspis pentagona, Carulaspis juniperi, Eupulvinaria hydrangeae [Pulvinaria hydrangeae]) substantially increased in population density. Data on localities, host plants, preferred parts of plants, developmental stages and population density are presented. In the survey, 8 species of Aleyrodoidea, 6 of which are new to the Swiss fauna, were collected. The total number of Aleyrodoidea recorded from Switzerland at present is 9.
