Abstract

Protection of cotton against aphids.

Abstract

Cotton in the Zaravshan valley of Uzbekistan is seriously damaged by the lucerne aphid [Aphis craccivora], melon aphid [A. gossypii] and large cotton aphid [A. frangulae] if control measures are not applied. Tests suggested that aphids could be controlled with an application of an ammophos dressing [of unstated composition] around the roots at bud formation and a decoction of lime sulfur [calcium polysulfide] (primarily used to control mites) applied at fruit formation instead of using the usual chemicals. Such measures killed 56 and 62% of aphids at bud- and fruit-formation, resp., and improved cotton growth and yield.
