Abstract

Cochlioquinol: a new cochlioquinone derivative produced by the plant pathogenic fungus Bipolaris cynodontis.

Abstract

The structure of cochlioquinol, a new compound isolated from a culture of B. cynodontis [Cochliobolus cynodontis], was determined, based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Cochlioquinol was found to be related to cochlioquinone derivatives that had previously been isolated as phytotoxins from a culture of B. bicolor [C. bicolor], in which the addition of acetone occurred at one of the quinone carbonyl groups of cochlioquinone. Cochlioquinol inhibited root growth of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) by 50% at a concn of 100 p.p.m.
