Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Evaluation of nine cultivars of bahiagrass, bermudagrass and kikuyugrass as alternatives to Pensacola bahiagrass in the low altitude region of Kyushu.

Abstract

In experiments at Miyazaki University in 1993-94, growth of 9 cultivars of Paspalum notatum, Cynodon dactylon and Pennisetum clandestinum was evaluated and compared with P. notatum cv. Pensacola. Sward height, DM yield, tiller density and digestibility were assessed. The 5 cultivars of C. dactylon failed to replace unsown species and gave poor DM yields. P. clandestinum cv. Whittet failed to replace unsown species and had low DM yield, but had higher DM digestibility than P. notatum cv. Competidor. P. notatum cv. Competidor, Nangoku and Nan-ou all showed potential as alternatives to cv. Pensacola. The 3 cultivars all gradually replaced unsown species after sowing and established dense stands by the end of the 2nd growing season.
