Grass-legume mixtures for coconut plantations in Bali.
Three experiments comparing different grass-legume combinations for forage production in a 45-year-old coconut plantation (60% light transmission) are reported. DM production was assessed over a 2-year period. The grass Paspalum malacophyllum was persistent and productive under intensive cutting and grazing treatments, but combined poorly with prostrate and twining legumes. Stenotaphrum secundatum and Brachiaria humidicola among the grasses, and the legumes Calliandra calothyrsus and Arachis spp., also showed potential for use in plantation pastures.
