Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Calliandra calothyrsus and Gliricidia sepium seedling growth response to phosphorus and soil acidity.

Abstract

This investigation was undertaken in view of the widely required use of these species in agroforestry systems on acid infertile soils in the tropics. The results are reported of a greenhouse pot experiment in which growth of Calliandra calothyrsus and Gliricidia sepium seedlings was tested with (1) the addition of various phosphorus fertilizer treatments (0, 25 and 100 kg/ha) + 4 t/ha lime to raise the soil pH from its original 4.3 to 5.1-5.2, and (2) the effect of these treatments was recorded on inoculations with a Rhizobium mixture or VAM fungi (Glomus etunicatum + Gigaspora margarita), and on root hair percentage coverage.
