Survey of nest associated acarina fauna in West Bengal.

Abstract

In 1984-85, a survey of the acarine fauna in the nests of Streptopelia chinensis, Acridotheres tristis, Sturnus contra, Corvus splendens, Pycnonotus cafer, Prinia socialis, Ploceus philippinus and Passer domesticus in 8 districts of West Bengal, India, was conducted. A total of 30 561 mites and 66 ticks were collected. The known acarine fauna from bird nests in India now includes 162 species representing 58 families and 5 orders. The main species found were Protolichus sp. (426), Pellonyssus passeri (324), Acaropsis docta [Aacropsellina docta] (297), Cheletonella sp. (295), Cheyletus malaccensis (298) Chelacaropsis moorei (290), Hemicheyletia sp. (285), Pterodectes sp. (282) and Cheletopsis anax (282).
