Breeding for resistance to the major diseases (broomrape (caused by the parasitic plant Orobanche cumana), rust (Puccinia helianthi), Verticillium wilt (V. dahliae), downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii), leaf spots (caused by Alternaria helianthi and Septoria helianthi), Sclerotinia wilt and head rot (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum), Phoma black stem (P. macdonaldii), Phomopsis brown stem (P. helianthi), charcoal rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)) and mineral deficiency in sunflowers is reviewed.
