Abstract

This paper discusses the biotechnological techniques used by IRRI under the following headings: (1) anther culture, including doubled haploid production; (2) molecular marker analysis, including (a) genome mapping, (b) gene tagging and (c) molecular analysis of pathogen populations; (3) wide hybridization, including (a) production of interspecific hybrids through embryo rescue, (b) development of monosomic alien addition lines and advanced backcross progenies, (c) gene transfer from wild species into rice, (d) cytoplasmic diversification, (e) characterization of alien genetic variation through isozyme and RFLP markers, and (f) tagging alien genes with RFLP markers; and (4) transformation, including protocols and genes for transforming rice for insect resistance, disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, nuclear male sterility and fertility restoration.
