Abstract

Breeding for disease resistance in wheat and barley in Tanzania.

Abstract

Some of the major wheat pathogens include rust (Puccinia recondita, P. striiformis and P. graminis), spot blotch (Cochliobolus sativus), glume blotch (Leptosphaeria nodorum), leaf blotch (Mycosphaerella graminicola) and patchy stunting. Major barley diseases are spot blotch, scald (Rhynchosporium secalis), net blotch (Pyrenophora teres) and barley yellow dwarf luteovirus. Breeding for disease resistance in Tanzania has mainly involved selection for short-term resistance among introductions and crosses under natural infection.
