Abstract

The niches of the corn and peach borers and interspecific competition between them in corn.

Abstract

In field studies in corn [maize] fields in 1993 and 1994, the pyralid Dichocrocis punctiferalis [Conogethes punctiferalis] was found to be one of the most important insect pests. The temporal, spatial and nutritive niche width of C. punctiferalis and Ostrinia furnacalis were very similar (similarity >90%), with high niche overlap. The ratio of their coexistence on the same part of the maize plant was <10% and the interspecific competition coefficient was >0.98.
