Comparative growth of multipurpose (indigenous vs exotic) tree species in the warm humid tropics of Kerala.
Performance of seventeen multipurpose (indigenous vs. exotic) tree species was compared in terms of early growth (4 yr old) characters under the warm humid tropical conditions of Kerala. Acacia auriculiformis attained maximum height and was closely followed by Casuarina equisetifolia. In terms of girth Bauhinia galpinii attained the maximum size. The data on bole volume clearly showed that indigenous species such as Mangifera indica, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Terminalia paniculata, etc., were superior to exotic species.
