Silvicultural, economic and social aspects of the cork oak woodlands.
An account is given of the economic importance of the cork oak (Quercus suber) woodlands of Spain, with data on area, types, ownership, cork production, products from pruning, and acorns and other products. The silvicultural management of the cork oak woodlands is also described, viz. regeneration, weeding, opening out, pruning and shaping, manipulation of stand density, cork harvesting rotations, fellings, screefing, and provision of infrastructure (e.g. firebreaks, etc.). Finally, a detailed quantified list is given of all the silvicultural and infrastructure work which must be done in cork oak forests (showing the labour requirement for the various jobs in man-hours per ha).
