Abstract

Wood of eighteen shrubs commonly occurring in tropical and temperate areas adjoining Dehra Dun, Uttar Pradesh, were evaluated for their calorific values and fuelwood properties. The species can be grouped into 11 (Berberis asiatica, Carissa opaca, Clerodendrum infortunatum, Crataegus crenulata, Debregeasia velutina, Helicteres isora, Prinsepia utilis, Pyrus pashia, Rhus parviflora, Woodfordia fruticosa, and Zanthoxylum alatum [Z. planispinum]) more suitable for use as fuelwood or briquettes (after conversion to charcoal) and 7 (Adhatoda vasica, Lantana camara, Murraya koenigii, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, Solanum nigrum, Vitex negundo and Ziziphus nummularia) which are less suitable.
