Abstract

Performance of some Eucalyptus viminalis subsp. viminalis provenances in central Italy: preliminary results.

Abstract

Twenty-one provenances (19 from SE Australia, 2 from Italy) were tested in a field trial near Rome; results are given for height and d.b.h. after 2 and 3 yr. Central-N. Victoria and S. New South Wales provenances (from an area between latitude 37° and 37° 30′ S. and longitude 147° 30′ and 149° E.) performed best. The Italian provenances (3488, from near Rome, and 3824, from Tuscany) performed as well as the best Australian ones, particularly 3488 - it is suggested that these be used in forest plantations, but, being unknown hybrids, are excluded from tree breeding programmes.
