Rehabilitation of open-cast coal mines in Singrauli region of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Details are given of plantings carried out on 10 overburden sites using 24 multipurpose tree species from before 1986 to 1992. Plants were established as 1-yr-old seedlings in pits with added cow dung in July-August (after the onset of the rains), and water harvesting measures were undertaken. Weeding was done in September and hoeing in December-January. After 3 yr survival was 80%. Expenditure was Rs 10-12 per plant and returns of Rs 50 per plant are expected after 5 yr from fuelwood, fodder and small timber for local use. Complete cover has been attained since 1983 with Prosopis juliflora, Cassia siamea and other species. Clear felling of strips of Prosopis juliflora is proposed to form a coppice understorey with taller species (Dalbergia sissoo, Albizia lebbeck and Tectona grandis) planted above.
