Occurrence and distribution of copepod fish parasites on the west coast of South Africa.

Abstract

The 1st systematic survey of copepod fish parasites along the west coast of South Africa from Saldanha Bay to Alexander Bay, recorded the prevalence and incidence of 11 species: Bomolochus sp., Chondracanthus neali, Lernentoma asellina, Medesicaste penetrans, Caligus diaphanus, Perissopus oblongatus, Pandarus bicolor, Hatschekia conifera, Brachiella supplicans, Charopinus dalmanni and C. dubius. Prevalence and incidence ranged from 78% and 16.3 in Bomolochus sp. to as low as 1% and 0.01 for Charopinus dubius. Host size preferences were also recorded.
