Abstract

Maturation and reproduction of pond-reared Penaeus schmitti.

Abstract

White shrimp (Penaeusschmitti) broodstock was grown from the postlarval stage in a 3-stage semi-intensive pond system. Mean weight after 10.5 months was 51.2 g for ♀♀ and 33.8 g for ♂♂. Their reproduction was then evaluated in 2 studies. The 1st study was conducted with unilaterally ablated or unablated ♀♀ and ♂♂ with ejaculated or non-ejaculated spermatophores. The best response was achieved with ablated ♀♀ plus non-ejaculated ♂♂ (0.87 spawnings per tank per day and 22 254 nauplii per tank per day). The 2nd study compared the reproductive response of captive ablated ♀♀ mated with pond-reared and wild ♂♂. More nauplii were produced from wild ♂♂ (78 583 nauplii per tank per day) than from pond-reared ♂♂ (57 777 nauplii per tank per day).
