Abstract

Spirochetosis in California game chickens.

Abstract

An outbreak of spirochaetosis occurred in a flock of 75 game chickens in California during autumn 1991, Affected birds were weak and anaemic. Many had greenish diarrhoea. Spirochaetes (Borrelia anserina) were seen on Giemsa-stained blood smears and in silver-stained tissue sections of kidney, liver and spleen. Splenomegaly, which is reported to be characteristic of fowl spirochaetosis, was not observed in 2 acutely infected chickens.
