Abstract

The subject is reviewed and recent research results discussed under the following headings: the powers of classical and molecular genetics (genetic controls - constitutiveness and inducibility, and physiological constraints to fulfilling genetic potential); inheritance of oxidant tolerance (tolerance to gaseous pollutants (ozone and sulfur dioxide), heat, drought and cold tolerance, xenobiotics that produce oxidants (cross tolerance between xenobiotic and other oxidative stress resistances), and antioxidant chemicals in plant cells (ascorbate and tocopherol, carotene, and flavonoids and melanins)); inheritance of enzymes of photooxidant degradation pathways (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase); molecular biology of photooxidate stress enzymes (Cu,Zn superoxide dismutases, Mn superoxide dismutases, Fe superoxide dismutases, and ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase); and transgenic plants expressing alien superoxide dismutase genes.
