Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

New foxtail millet cultivars Chi Gu 4 and Chi Gu 5.

Abstract

These Setaria italica varieties are high yielding, with multiple disease resistance and a high content of vitamin B1 [thiamin]. Chi Gu 4 (earlier designated 80-506) was selected among progeny derived by irradiating Zhao Gu 1. A midseason type, with a growth period of 118 days, it reaches a height of 161 cm. Mean ear length is 22.7 cm and thiamin content 1.042 mg/100 g grain. Chi Gu 4 is resistant to drought, Ustilago crameri and Pyricularia setariae and gives grain yields of 3600-4287 kg/ha and straw yields of 5787 kg/ha. Chi Gu 5 (earlier 80-562) was derived from the cross Zhao Gu 1 Ă— 7506. A midseason variety (growth period 116 days), it reaches a height of 134 cm and has a mean ear length of 24 cm. Thiamin content is 1.114 mg/100 g grain. The variety gives grain yields of 3700-4200 kg/ha (maximum 6100 kg/ha) and is resistant to drought, U. crameri and P. setariae.
