Abstract

Agronomic improvement in oilseed brassicas.

Abstract

This review focuses on recent developments and current and future trends for agronomic improvements in oilseed Brassica crops. After (1) an introductory section which covers the world socioeconomic importance, genomic relationships, plant and seed description, mode of pollination and oilseed quality improvements of Brassica oilseed species, the subject is discussed under the following headings: (2) improving seed, oil and protein yields, including yield components and breeding methods, heterosis and F1 hybrids, and pollination control systems; (3) improving resistance to diseases, including Leptosphaeria maculans, Albugo candida, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Alternaria spp., Pyrenopeziza brassicae, viruses and Verticillium dahliae, and the development of herbicide-tolerant cultivars; and (4) future prospects, including interspecific hybridization, improvements based on biotechnology (in vitro haploid production, somaclonal variation, protoplast fusion and genetic transformation) and the use of DNA markers.
