Abstract
Biotechnology for rice improvement.
Abstract
This paper reviews the main objectives of IRRI's biotechnology programme. Coverage is given to the following areas of research: anther and microspore culture, including double haploid production; marker aided selection, including genome mapping, gene tagging and molecular analysis of pathogen populations; wide hybridization, including production of interspecific hybrids through embryo rescue, gene transfer from wild species, cytoplasmic diversification and use of isoenzyme and RFLP markers to characterize and tag alien genes; methods for transformation; and genes for transformation of insect and disease resistance.
