Forage tree legumes in tropical agriculture.
This book provides an introduction to forage tree legumes for advanced students of crop science, animal nutrition and forestry. It arose as a compilation and expansion of material presented at international training courses held at the University of Queensland in 1990 and 1992, entitled 'Fodder tree legumes - multipurpose species for agriculture'. The book describes the main genera and species concerned, including Leucaena, Sesbania, Calliandra, Acacia, Prosopis and many others. It is arranged in 7 chapters, each with constituent papers: (1) Introduction (1 paper); (2) Origins and characteristics of the principal forage tree legume species (7 papers); (3) Agronomy and management of tree legumes (6 chapters); (4) Animal production from tree legumes (6 papers, including topics such as nutritive value and antinutritive factors); (5) Multipurpose use of tree legumes in tropical farming systems (2 papers); (6) Insects and diseases of tree legumes (3 papers); (7) Regional studies using tree legumes (6 papers). Most of these issues are applicable worldwide, but a number of case studies on the use of tree legumes in Queensland and Southeast Asia are included.
