Some edible insects of Kwara State, Nigeria.

Abstract

The use of 7 species of edible insects that are generally acceptable in the 4 dominant tribes in Kwara State, Nigeria, is described. The larvae of Cirina forda is perhaps the most important and most widely marketed. Other widely appreciated insects are the termite Macrotermes natalensis and the curculionid Rhynchophorus phoenicis. The other insects discussed are the cricket Brachytrupes membranaceus, the grasshoppers Cyrtacanthacris aeruginosa unicolor and Zonocerus variegatus and the scarabeid Oryctes boas.
