Pheromone biology of sawflies.
A brief historical summary of the evidence of chemical communication in sawflies is given, with an emphasis on the Diprionidae. Sex pheromone production in females is discussed, with descriptions of production site and release and the chemical composition of pheromones. The male response to sex pheromone involves pheromone perception and induced behaviour. Field studies on Diprion similis, Neodiprion sertifer and other diprionids are summarized. The use of pheromones in pest control, for monitoring, population suppression and as oviposition deterrents, is also discussed.
