Abstract

Improved cultivation of tania, Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott, in Martinique.

Abstract

Research conducted in Martinique since 1983 on improved cultivation of tania is discussed including: maintaining and selecting indigenous ecotypes, improving farming systems and producing plants free from pests, especially Pythium myriotylum. Several ecotypes yielded 13-18 t corms/ha under good cultural conditions. These could be characterized on the basis of growth duration, corm production and organoleptic qualities. An improved method of vegetative propagation is described with a multiplication rate of 30.
