Abstract

Tolerance of Albizia lebbeck to Cu and Fe application.

Abstract

Albizia lebbeck is a widely planted tree along roadsides in Karachi, Pakistan. A. lebbeck seeds were placed in petri dishes containing Cu(NO3)2 or Fe2(PO4)3 at different concentrations (0, 100, 300, 500 and 700 µg/ml) to determine potential effects of pollution on this species. After 10 d, when no further germination was observed, all seedlings were removed and root and shoot lengths were measured. Cu and Fe treatments reduced seed germination, particularly at the higher concentrations. Application of Cu reduced seed germination more than Fe. Roots of seedlings subjected to the higher concentrations of Cu and Fe were much shorter.
